Colonoscopy Procedures

Dr. Ritu Sachdev is collaborating with EndoVigilant Inc., a Maryland based startup to trial their Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled system for polyp detection assistance during colonoscopy procedures at Greenbelt Endoscopy Center. The clinical trial is among the first ever of its kind in the US, focusing on studying the benefits and impacts of using such a system over hundreds of procedures in a high-volume private endoscopy center. Please contact her office at (301) 262-8188 if you would like to participate in the trial.

AI is increasingly being used as an aid to physicians in multiple areas of medicine. AI enabled Computer Aided Detection (CADe) has the potential to assist endoscopists in the detection of colon polyps and flat lesions during colonoscopy. Real-time detection assistance for polyps can potentially increase adenoma detection rates (ADR), adenomas per colonoscopy (APC) and decrease adenoma miss rates (AMR), as computerized algorithms are able to analyze the entire field of view more rapidly than humanly possible and do not suffer from fatigue or distraction.

EndoVigilant’s AI software for colonoscopy is designed to automatically detect and highlight possible colon polyps using its deep learning AI algorithm that has been trained on thousands of polyp images from procedures performed by expert gastroenterologists. The company recently won a Presidential poster award at the American College of Gastroenterology Conference for its findings from a pilot clinical study performed at VA Palo Alto in collaboration with faculty from Stanford School of Medicine.
